37 years ago today, the 15 mile-wide, 960 mbar eye of Hurricane Gilbert traversed the entire length of Jamaica with devastating effect. A 19 foot storm surge, 32 inches of flooding rainfall, and 125 mph winds made him the most destructive Hurricane in the island’s history, with the areas closest to the point of landfall described as looking akin to an atomic bomb aftermath.
